How To Assign OPENQUERY Results from Linked Servers to local variables..

Hi All,

I have a problem about assigning the results of an OPENQUERY. Please check the code below:

DECLARE @.sqlString nvarchar(4000)
DECLARE @.sqlString1 nvarchar(4000)
DECLARE @.custName nvarchar(100)

SET @.custID = 2
SET @.sqlString1 = 'SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE CustID = ' + CAST( @.custID as varchar(6))
SELECT @.sqlString = 'SELECT CustName FROM OPENQUERY(DEEPACCESS,''' + @.sqlString1 + ''')'
EXECUTE(@.sqlString)

--
The above code works fine but i need something like
SELECT @.sqlString = 'SELECT @.custname=CustName FROM OPENQUERY(DEEPACCESS,''' + @.sqlString1 + ''')'
EXECUTE(@.sqlString)

By doing this i want to assign the CustName to the local variable @.custName.
I tried to use a temp table but in that case i was not able to specify a where clause in @.sqlString1. (i'd rather use linked_server.databasename.owner.tablename , but i read that this does not provide good performance )

Any suggestions about the problem are welcomed!
Thanks in advance,

Bahtiyar KARANLIKdeclare @.sqlString nvarchar(1000)
SELECT @.sqlString = 'SELECT @.custname=CustName FROM OPENQUERY(DEEPACCESS,''' + @.sqlString1 + ''')'
EXEC sp_executesql @.sqlString, N'@.custname varchar(20) out', @.custname out

or

SELECT @.sqlString = 'SELECT CustName FROM OPENQUERY(DEEPACCESS,''' + @.sqlString1 + ''')'
create table #a (s varchar(20))
insert #a
exec (@.sqlstring)

select @.custname = s from #a
drop table #a

Using the 4 part name in the query should be just s good. If you are joining with strings then make sure the servers are collation compatible so that the filter is performed on the remote server and check the query plan.
This sort of thing can give bad performance if used as a join to a local table but if you are just selecting using constants for a filter it should be OK.

How to add tabls to published article without recreating snapshot?

Hi experts:

We have 4 SQL SERVER 2000 servers linked via replication, and due to business changes we have to add one table to the published databases. And the existed database has more than 20g, recreating the snapshot and re-init replication is not allowed as the business cannot be stopped more than 1 hour. So my question is how to add tables to the published article without recreating the snapshot?

By that is not possilbe, can we publish one new article on the same database?

Thanks in advance!

Ron

Hi Ron,

If you are using merge replication, you have to regenerate the snapshot for the entire publication after you added the new article. For snapshot\transactional replication, the snapshot agent will only generate the snapshot for the new article if the immediate_sync property of your publication is set to 0. In any case, you can always put the new article in a separate publication instead.

Hope that helps,

How to add services to SQL Server Service Manager

I have 2 SQL Servers.
On the 1st server, when I go to the Service Manager, I can se all the 4
services:
1. Distributed Transaction Coordinator
2. Microsoft Search

4. SQL Server Agent
On the 2nd server, when I go to the Service Manager, I only see the last two

Thank you

I did checked this out and, yes, they are installed.
Actually I have a suspicion that the fault is on the Security Policy applied
to the server that misses these 2 services on the Service Manager. The 2
servers are in diffferent Active Directory OUs, so different security
policies are applied in each case.
The problem is that I don't know what the exact security issue is the one
that creates the problem (e.g. NTFS permissions? Where and for Who?). If I
did, I could let the System Administrator know and he would be able to help
me grant/revoke the necessary privileges.
Do you have any idea, who needs What privileges on Where so that the 2
missing services can appear in the Service Manager?
Thank you for your time.

How to add same user to diff DBs on diff Servers?

Does anybody know,
how to add same user to diff DBs on diff Servers?
something like this,
EXEC sp_adduser 'xxxxx'--add user to server1.DB1
EXEC server2.master.dbo. sp_adduser 'xxxxx'--add user to server2.DB2
or other ways?
Thanks.Since SQL Server uses logins at the server level and users at the database
level probably you would need to add the logins first. You can use the
Transfer Logins DTS Task or simply use Enterprise Manager/Management Studio.
This would add the login at the server level.
To add the user, just select the login name on 'Security, Logins',
right-click and select Properties. On the Database Access tab, select the
database and database roles.
Giving exactly the right permissions as the original database would require
scripting the original database.
Hope this helps,

How to add a new database with a new name by copying an existing datafile?

I want to save a standard SQL Server 2005 Database as a datafile to disk
which I want to add to several other SQL Server at other servers with
another name of the database. What's the procedure to do this? I've been
experimenting with copying the datafiles but SQL Server reponses that the
file names or database name don't match.

I want to restore the database within SQL Server Management Studio. I can't
find the 'WITH MOVE' option. It only shows the following settings :
RESTORE WITH RECOVERY
RESTORE WITH NORECOVERY
RESTORE WITH STANDBY
I've tried first to have this done at the same server before I move to
another server :
-made a BACKUP of a resource database
-added a new empty database called TESTCOMPANY
-right click at the database TESTCOMPANY and choose 'RESTORE'
-choose to add from file and select the BACKUP file in the first step
-choose 'OVERWRITE THE EXISTING DATABASE'
Now, in case I set one the 3 listed recovery state, it shows error messages
right in the beginning.
What should I do?

Sorry, this is going to be like trying to swap out RAM through a USB port --
USB is a great technology but it does not cover all the bases, and the same
is true for SSMS. If the paths on the new machine and old machine are not
identical (and they can't be identical on the same machine), you will likely
have to get your hands dirty and learn/use the RESTORE DATABASE command.

How to activate licenses

I've just installed Workgroup Edition for the first time. I have copies on each of two servers, each ordered with five CALs.

My problem is that I don't know how to assign the licenses. I can't find anything in the documentation about it, nothing in the tools menus, and no reference to SQL Server in the Licensing application. The latter really looks like the right place, so if I had to guess, I'd think I've installed something incorrectly. Shouldn't SQL Server appear there as a product?

Of course, I'd also think this would be documented somewhere, but then it's probably one of those things that any idiot would know, so there's no need to explain it.

Once I get past that problem, I'll be setting up eight workstations. I understand from Microsoft Sales that since I've purchased a total of ten CALs, then all eight workstations will be able to access either server. Do I have to do anything special to make that work? Currently, there's no domain. The servers are just members of a workgroup.

Thanks,

Dick

There is no license 'manager', there is no 'place' to record the licenses. It is an 'honor' system. (Except for Small Business Server -which does have a license manager built it.)

Keep the license information on file in case your organization ever gets hit with a software license compliance audit.

Yes, since you now have 10 CALs, up to 10 client devices can connect to your servers.
