How to Attach MS Access Database to MSDE

I have a program installation setup that comes with a default MS Access Database. How do I attach this default database into MSDE on my server?
Message posted via http://www.sqlmonster.com
You cannot attach Access databse file (*.mdb/*.mde) to SQL Server/MSDE, they
are completely different thing , except for being called "database" and
being from MS. But you can use any available tools you know to transfer the
Access database (structure and/or data) to a database on MSDE. If you have
Access2K or later, open the Access *.mdb file, click menu "Tools->Database
Utilities->Upsizing Wizard...". It will lead you to "Upsize" your Access
database to SQL Server/MSDE database. After running the wizard, you may
still need to do some manual changes on the newly created database on MSDE
to make sure PK/Index, data types are OK, and since Access queries may not
may not be transferred into the database on MSDE, you definitely have
re-write some or all of queries you used in the Access file with views or
stored procedures in MSDE.

how to attach Access database to MSDE

Hello,
what is the procedure to attach a .MDB databse to MSDE?
I don't care using forms or report from the Access database, I just want to
have tables and queries on MSDE then I will analyze data and arrange comments
to them.
Thanks
Rocco
Hi,
You can not attach a Access database to SQL Server MSDE. This is due to
changes in architecture.Methods to transfer:-
1. SQL Server DTS to copy structure and data
2. Upsizing wizard (
http://www.mssqlcity.com/FAQ/General/MigFromAcc.htm )
Thanks

|||OK. ANy tutorial for the DTS? I have opened and since anything is labelled in
that sort of *MicrosoftCreeepingLanguage* I'm not able to use it.
Maybe is not the MicrosoftCreeping thing, but only that I'm not to good at
that!

|||Hi,
This migration is very simple. Just open the Export and Import utility
wizard from SQL Server program group.
Select the source as Access and destination as SQL Server MSDE and select
dbname.
Now select the tables you need to copy. CLick next.
This wizard will automatically drags you till end and will copy the data to
SQL Server. So easy.
Thanks

How to alter the transaction logfile size in MSDE 2000?

Hi there,

I recently saw that the transaction log files of user dbs grow undefinitely in SQL Server 2000 - one of our customers had a 11 GB log file which totally slowed down the server.
Another customer of ours uses one of my applications logging all actions in a MSDE database file and I fear that the corresponding transaction log file will grow and block the system too - is there any way that I could shrink and set the max size of the transaction log file through SQL?

I already know the command "SHRINK FILE ('filename')" but I haven't found a SQL command to set the max size.

Thank you for any hints!

SaschaTo set the growth, UOM for increment, increment value, allocated size, and max sizeeeee, you need to use ALTER DATABASE. However, the claim that the size of the log file slows down the server or even "block" it is somewhat strange. I've never heard of the size of the log file having such detremental effect on the system. Anyone has other opinion?|||hi rdjabarov,

thank you for your comment. How should the ALTER DATABASE command look like? It's not a part of the standard SQL command, that's why I haven't found any documentation in standard SQL books.
The server slowed down because there were only 180 kb free space on the drive and windows needs some space for swapping, running other programs and other stuff.
I'll try to see if I can get some info on ALTER DATABASE with MS SQL Server.|||Now THAT (!!!) is a different story! In other words, your db is on the verge of becoming Suspect. BTW, your OS doesn't need any more room for swap file, unless you're bogging down the memory as well.

BOL (ALTER DATABASE syntax):

MODIFY FILE
Specifies the given file that should be modified, including the FILENAME, SIZE, FILEGROWTH, and MAXSIZE options.

How to add/edit job in MSDE?

Hello
I would like to add/edit job in MSDE, is there any way to do this or any other third party tool like Enerprise Manager ?

Learn the syntax of sp_add_job, sp_add_jobstep, sp_add_jobschedule, etc.
You can run these in the MSDB database from osql.
You're going to have a tough time getting by the license requirements of
using Enterprise Manager, but there are other graphical tools which may
handle SQL Server Agent, eliminating the need to learn all the syntax and
parameters of the msdb procs. See http://www.aspfaq.com/2442

How to add a named instance of sql server to EM?

I got an app that installed a named instance of MSDE instead of including
its databases in my existing SQl server instance. I would like to be able to
manage the databases and view the table structures of this app in Enterprise
manager. How can I include that named instance and its tables etc.. in my
SQL server Enterprise manager?
Thanks for any help,
BobBob,
Try registering the SQL Server instance using computername\instancename.

Check the error logs from the MSDE instance from when it
started up to see what protocol it is listening on - if it's
just shared memory, you can't connect to it over a network.
In that case, you need to enable TCP/IP.

How to acesses sql server 2000 from remote pc ?

hi masters,

i am using Sql server 2000 (MSDE) , and i want to acesses database from remote machin, how it is possible any one tell me pls?

You need to enable NP and/or TCP protocols on the server side using SQL Server Server Utility. You need restart MSDE after the configuration change. If you have SQL Server 2005 installed, you need to run SQL Browser as well. In addition, make sure your firewall does not block the TCP ports if you have firewall installed. Check you error log to find out which TCP port your MSDE is listening on. For Sql Browser, you need put UDP port 1434 into exception.

Thanks,

|||

Thanks for reply,

but still unable to connect the remote pc,

i have working with only sqlserver 2000

and also

enable NP and/or TCP protocols on the server side using SQL Server Server Utility

what can i do next?

|||

Are the client and server on the same network?
Can you ping your server from remote client machine?
What's the tcp port sql server listen on? You can get this from errorlog. Try "telnet remotemachine yoursqlport", can you connect? If you have firewall, please put both your sqlport(tcp) and UDP 1434 into exception.

|||

thanks for reply

1. Yes the client and server on the same network.

2. Yes ping is replying

but how to do--?

What's the tcp port sql server listen on? You can get this from errorlog. Try "telnet remotemachine yoursqlport", can you connect? If you have firewall, please put both your sqlport(tcp) and UDP 1434 into exception.
